Couple of crazy things happening.
The settings state that it uses the first image found and use it as a Featured Image … only it doesn’t! Doesn’t appear on post listing or on the admin panel in the “Featured Image” section. (Thought I posted this yesterday, but seems to have been deleted)
I have used images from the media gallery, and external URL links, but neither work! I still have to go to the bottom of the admin page and manually select from media folder – which isn’t helpful when you’ve got 800 pages to upload.
I installed a plugin to assist with upload (WP Mass Article Wizard) … but something is amiss either with plugin or theme as it uploads the text files, but one or other simply removes every image URL. I tried copying the long code inserted by the media editor, and adding it to external files. When uploaded, it became:
<a href=""><img src="" width="298" height="298" /></a>
Appreciate this may not be something you can answer … but since you say the theme will pick up the first image as a Featured Image, but doesn’t appear to do so, there must be an answer to this.
Let’s see if this gets deleted!

The theme uses that WordPress functionality that relies on that association to retrieve the first post image to use as featured.Depending on your (or plugin’s or program’s) mass-post insertion methodology, these associations may not be created, so the theme has no information to use to retrieve featured images.
