Good Evening,
I am using the Codex child theme of Rosetta. The WordPress.com associates that are helping me with my creating my first webpage are telling me that my problem with the very slow site speed is because of this theme. I am happy with the animations and effects of this theme and want to do whatever i can to keep using it. What could be the issue?

Did you perform comparison speed tests with both Roseta and one of the default Twenty themes (both displaying the same content)? What is the speed difference between the two scenarios?
A quick speed test on your site indicates that the worst scored points are related to the content you have on the site (external resources and scripts) and server configuration (caching headers):

Thank you for your input. I spoke to the team at WordPress.com and they fixed some caching and plugin issues and provided me with the following

They did say however that the test is throwing a score of “0” in the javascript of the homepage. I was told this is completely a theme issue.

The theme is only responsible for one of the scripts listed there, while the companion plugin has two. The rest are related to the Youtube embeds and a socials plugin.
You can use the information here

to manually force all scripts to be enqueued deferred or async, but keep in mind that can break scripts functionality (when some depend on others to work). In this case you may be forced to exclude some from deferring/loading asynchronously.
