Fix content boxes

I would like to fixed the position of the content box on my website. We built the page with a graphic in the background on the left side and would like that do remain uncovered by text or other content. No matter what I do, the content box resizes when I change the size of the web browser. How can I avoid this? I’m okay with a left to right scroll for those without a large screen resolution.

Can anyone help?
