How to use manual excerpts in posts

WordPress automatically generates excerpts (short introductory texts) out of the posts’ content. However, it also implements the ability to manually type in the posts excerpts instead of the auto-generated ones.
This functionality is slightly hidden in the screen options, but can be quickly activated and used.
