then styling that div using custom CSS:

Sorry, but you’ll have to look some place else for the cause of this – hard disk corruption, memory errors, MySQL version bug, PHP errors, incorrect MySQL shutdown…
Why don’t you try working on a subfolder/subdomain of a hosted website (via FTP)?

All you have to do to make sure the slider works is to check there are no JavaScript issues on your site and that the image URLs are correct and publicly visible (or that the posts have featured images). That’s all.
