Assigning this page as the static homepage made it be accessible via both links.
Edit your menu and remove one of the second instance (the one pointing to the page).

If the configured size is landscape and cropping is enabled, the thumbnails of portrait images will also be landscape (with plenty of the image missing). If cropping is not enabled, WordPress will try to resize the original images to fit in the configured constraints (making the thumbnail very small).
Mixing portrait and landscape images for post featured images will create this kind of resize/crop/layout issues.
If you use the image post format, images are displayed full size (that’s how the image post format works).

Alternatively, you could search for a plugin that lets you display posts via shortcode and try placing the shortcodes in the last presentation page text area.

As a result, if you want to use WordPress’ static/blog page option to assign a different blog page then you are also forced to use a static page for the homepage.
As a workaround for this, we’ve included a “Blog Page” template which can be assigned to any page and turns it into the normal blog section.

Try to exclude the slider images from this caching/CDN service.

Try recreating the thumbnails if the images were already in the library as Nirvana has its own featured image size option and looks for the desired image size.

Twenty Fourteen doesn’t have a top menu – what is displayed at the top of the page is in fact its main navigation.
