Well the answer was so obvious I’m embarrassed I even asked 🤭
Just to echo what I said above, and have said to Zed privately, but huge thanks to him for the timely and efficient way he dealt with my problems after updating to 2.4. A perfect example of how customer service should be run!

Well all sorted, huge thanks to Zed from support who tided up my custom functions.php and added the 2.4 functionality.
I think that’ll be next. Cryout have kindly offered to have a look at my child theme to see if there’s anything obvious. Great service!
Indeed I’ve just compared 2.3.2.2 and 2.4 and the newer version seems to break a few things including the header, but also fonts etc. Will stick with the former for now!
Just to answer my own question, after some testing I’ve upgraded a couple of sites and all seems well – sticking with the classic editor.
This is odd – when trying to select my “upscaled” header image, I’m not seeing the “skip cropping” button, but when I select another random image in my library (dimensions unrelated to the proportions of the header image), it appears fine!
Will play around and see if I can get it appear for the header image.
Thank you – this looks really promising, but I am clearly being stupid – I can’t work out how you skip the cropping step? If I try and upload an image that doesn’t fit the required dimensions (1200 x 160) in my case, the image isn’t actually saved as a header until the “crop” button is clicked. Am I missing something obvious?
