Nevermind. I was looking Appearance->customize->widgets, not appearance->widgets. Got it. Thanks.
cgs18ParticipantThis reply is private.cgs18ParticipantWhen I go to Appearance-> Widgets, it only has a footer widget. I have my layout set to right sidebar, but on all my pages except the blog page, I have the layout for each page set to full screen. Do I have to do this a different way to get the right sidebar to show up under widgets?
cgs18ParticipantThanks. Is there any trick to getting the pictures to work–in general? Images are the bane of my existence. I’m using featured images on blog posts. I literally have the Featured Boxes Top and Featured Boxes Bottom set exactly the same way and in the top, the pictures are displaying fine (I have 2 columns), but in the bottom they’re distorted (also 2 columns). If I do one column, they’re really stretched and distorted.
I’m worried that as we add to the blog, we’ll never get the pictures to look right in all cases on the homepage. Is there a trick to this?
If I used Landing Page–>posts, they display correctly, but I don’t have flexibility of how many to display (I only want one or two on the landing page, but want to show more on the blog page itself). It also doesn’t seem to allow a heading. So I prefer the Featured Boxes method.
By the way, the animated feature is really cool. I don’t know if we’ll use it, but it’s cool!
cgs18ParticipantPerfect–thanks!
cgs18ParticipantI just added a featured image and now the logo is above the image and the title and tag line are on top of the image, which is maybe how it’s supposed to work? But on a page with no featured image, it’s not positioned in a good place. Check the services page for an example with a featured image and the contact page for no image.
cgs18ParticipantThis reply is private.cgs18ParticipantThank you! I thought it needed something to specify homepage only, but didn’t know what I needed to do.
I had to put a comma between #branding and #logo and now it’s working.
.home #branding, #logo { display: none; }
cgs18ParticipantI put it in the Additional CSS field–that was the first thing I tried–but it makes the logo/title disappear on every page, not just the homepage. Do I need something in the CSS to specify just the homepage?
cgs18ParticipantOk, I got back in with some help from my hosting company. Phew!
I’m still not sure where to put the css you provided.
cgs18ParticipantThis reply is private.cgs18ParticipantOk, so I’m just learning CSS and I’m not sure where to put the code you gave me. I tried in “additional CSS”, but that didn’t work, so I tried in various places–in style.css it took it hid it on all the pages.
I was trying to put it in the landing-page.php file and when that didn’t work I deleted the code, but apparently I have a stray bracket or something and now I can’t get into any file at all to try to find my error. I get a “parse error” message. I can’t even logout. I’m stuck. This is not a live website, so not tragic or urgent (but it feels kind of urgent), but is there a way out of this? I tried just closing the browser and now I can’t get back in at all. Is there a way to recover? And if not, how do I just start over?
cgs18ParticipantNo, my homepage isn’t blank. But I just made it blank (mine isn’t published yet, so I can fool around with things without anyone seeing) and disabled it on Settings->Landing Page->Featured Content and it doesn’t show the title (Home).
cgs18ParticipantWeird. I’m not having that problem.
cgs18ParticipantHave you tried setting Customize->Settings->Landing Page->Featured Content to DISABLED? That’s what makes it show or not show on mine.
cgs18ParticipantI like looking through the forum and seeing other people’s websites. I just wanted to say I think yours looks great! I don’t really know the answer to your question, but my guess is that you have a page called “Home” in your list of pages, but that page doesn’t actually have anything on it, and it’s showing up because you have it set to show up on the landing page. Check Customize->Landing Page->text areas and see if you have one of them set to Home. If so, disable that. If that’s not it, I don’t know where it’s coming from.
cgs18ParticipantAppearance->Customize->Colors->Header: Header overlay and Header overlay opacity.
cgs18ParticipantThanks, good to know the paid support is good. I just don’t want to go into a theme blind. Some have “pro” versions that I might be willing to pay for once I’ve tried the free version, but these cryout themes actually seem to have everything I could want. I used a free theme from another company for a different website, and while the theme was really nice, there was no support forum like this and the wordpress forum for the theme didn’t get many responses from the company or from others using the themes. These Cryout forums are nice.
cgs18Participant@jhabdas, that’s what I said, lol! Now that I’m getting the hang of things with this theme, I really like it and how customizable it is. But I agree @corgrim, it’s not obvious or intuitive. I’d love documentation, but I guess they don’t do as much of that with free themes. I’m staying away from paid themes because I can’t take them for a test drive before purchasing, and so many things like this come up where you’re just not sure if the theme is right for you. So, Cryout Creations, thanks for this theme and for a decent support forum. I’m relatively new to all this and finding themes that do what I want (like having a logo AND title in the header) has been frustrating, but this one looks very promising.
cgs18ParticipantTry going to Landing Page, and then with each option (Featured Icon Blocks, Featured Boxes Top, Featured Boxes Bottom, Text Areas) disabling everything. Then add back one at at time to see what goes where. Right now I have everything disabled except Text Areas–>Text Area 1, which I have set to “Home” so the information I have on the page named “home” shows up there. You can have other pages show up as well if you want. Disable them all to start and the add back in what you want.
cgs18ParticipantI was having the same problem and finally got rid of it. Go to Customize->Site Identity-> Header Media and and remove the “current header image”.
cgs18ParticipantOops, you have to do the same thing for Featured Box Bottom.

cgs18ParticipantFound it! Landing page->Featured Box Top: Set “boxes content” to DISABLED.

cgs18ParticipantUnfortunately themes on WordPress.org don’t allow turning off the posts on the landing page, or change the number of posts to show.
I posted a new topic about this one–couldn’t tell the issue from the title of this post. Is there a workaround? I’m using wordpress.com, not .org.
cgs18ParticipantThere is no “General options” under Landing Page. There’s Landing Page->Settings where I can change the featured post to “disabled”, but the blog posts are still showing up. The option I had before was “static page.” I see a “posts” option, which will show the posts below the 3 boxes of excerpts–so they show up twice. But nothing is making the 3 boxes go away.
I’ve disabled every area on the homepage. But I still have those 3 blog post boxes below the slider.
