I have been using mantra theme for a while now, I am new to blogging however as I understand when I set a featured image. It needs to show up in main page as thumbnail with short description. However it does not. Can you please help me?

Is the theme configured to display posts as excerpts?
Look under the Post Information Settings section on the theme’s settings page – that’s the case when the theme will display featured images (thumbnails) in posts lists.
