I am trying to remove the left sidebar text
Left Sidebar default message

You currently have no widgets set in the left sidebar. You can add widgets via the Dashboard.
To hide this sidebar, switch to a different Layout via the Theme Customizations

as I don’t want a sidebar but like the look of the coloured background on my home page (rather than a full width white page)
is this possible to do and if so how do i remove it

To keep the sidebar visible but remove that text place an empty (and title-less) Text widget in the widget area.
