Cryout,
I love your Nirvana theme but it just crashed when I tried to update the theme. This is the error “[03-Aug-2015 21:13:59] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘:’ in /home1/drrebek1/public_html/wp-content/themes/nirvana/includes/widgets.php on line 99”
Plug ins installed:Akismet, Column shortcodes, fast secure contact form, limit attempts by BestWebSoft, Shortcodes Ultimate, very simple google maps, wordpress backup to Dropbox, WordPress Importer, Yoast SEO. All of the plugins are up to date.
The host was able to get the site back up but the theme is not updated.
ThanksAugust 4th, 2015 at 10:59 #32450GreenerSorry for cross posting but as the other thread is marked “solved” I thought Cryout may not be reading it. It’s great that Sergio’s fix is working for people but as I can’t access my log in page any more (it’s just comes up with a parse error) I can’t try to action this fix. Please can someone from Cryout say when they expect to fix this. This is the 3rd day my site has been down and I’m losing money. Please help.
August 4th, 2015 at 15:56 #32452Luke SkywalkerI am going to play devils advocate for a second. Sorry, Zed, I am not speaking for you, but I am going to try to help.
First the solution, or how I resolved the parse error.
Follow the file path folks. Sue F has it sitting right there(Sue I would not be so quick to show complete file path with the your name in it. Start at public html if you have to and then paste).
Go to your server files, however you typically access them, and follow the file path. Find line 99. That is the issue, and there is a solution in the other thread marked solved. I have not tried that as of yet, so not sure if it will work. If it does not, then I suppose I will fix it. How I will fix it? I have no idea because, I have really very limited coding skills. Nor do I really understand how all of this crazy internet stuff works. But I do know how to copy and paste into google. I may have to modify and change my search but somewhere, somehow, google knows. What I did to fix it was delete line 99. This gave me access to my admin, although not at first. Not sure why, but it did not, and I just kept trying things. Crazy things I would have been scared to try before. This is the key to all of this, I did this because I know I have a backup. If you do not have backups then not sure what to tell you, except you have to create backups. I use updraft, and used it for the first time to restore my website after this. This means I learned something, when your site breaks turn it to a positive. I did have to gain access to admin, which I said was done through trial and error. I, by no means am suggesting you go changing all your files as if you know what you are doing, but look carefully for the answer. It is there and make the changes. Of course you can contact your host, and they can probably help as well.
See this is the thing, and once again, I am not speaking for Zed. I am doing this because I asked a really dumb question of a theme developer once. No this is not a dumb question at all, website’s are broken and that is not cool. See he never answered and I was angry, well a little while later, I just happened to find the answer, and boy did I feel dumb. Now I understood why this developer did not take the time out of his really busy schedule, writing all this insane code so we can use his stuff. Because it was up to me to figure that out. Sure we have to have them fix things, this is only natural. Zed posted in the other thread that it was related to a server issue. We can all meet at some coffee shop and discuss how that should not happen, but you know what it did. It is not up to them to hold our hand in every time there is a problem. Things just happen folks, things that are out of their control. My son’s phone had to be reset during moblegeddon, why? Because google screwed up. Do you know how smart those people are? Code breaks things, it just happens.
If you are going to have a website then, you must accept the fact that with great power comes great responsibility. Google it folks, duck duck go it even. Somewhere there are ways to figure out the answers, that we are responsible for.
I do not know what Zed thinks, but I am guessing he truly cares about his craft and he does all he can to help us. There are just some things he cannot do, because if he did then we would not be living with Nirvana
Look on the bright side young padawan, you found out what order 66 meant a few years ago. Now today you will learn what line 99 means. FYI, there are a gazillion line 99’s out there, we must maintain our focus, as any jedi would.
May the Force be with you
August 7th, 2015 at 06:13 #32474joeSeems i’m having the same problem, since update html requests going through the roof and bringing site down.
August 8th, 2015 at 23:41 #32504VIVok site broke- allI did was click update to new Nirvana, white page! Gone-on hold with Bluehost for help!!!!!!! WHY IS THIS HAPPENING. I’M NOT TECH SAVVY ANYWAY THIS SHOULDN’T HAPPEN.
August 9th, 2015 at 01:08 #32505VivBluehost fixed it- all I can convey is it did something to php, he had to redo it- said it was odd there was no “chosen php….” that he’s never seen that. So he literally clicked a box and it was fine. He says and I think I do now have this version. As I no longer see cue to update Nirvana plus his word that yes it’s new one. Guys you should fix this!
