Create three pages. Name the first one ‘About’, the second one ‘Second’ and the third one ‘Third’. Notice the menu tab has the same name as each page. (there is a name on the tab, and the page itself has the same name below the tab, in larger print).

Go to Appearance> Customize> Static Front Page. Select ‘a static page’ bullet, and set the ‘Front Page’ drop down to your first page. ‘Posts Page’ blank.

Notice what was the ‘Home’ page and tab with the search box is no longer there.

Look at each of your three pages. Select them with their respective tabs. Notice the first tab says ‘Home’ while the page title in larger print below says ‘About’. So, you cannot rename the ‘Home’ tab even if you changed the first page’s name from ‘Home’ to ‘About’.

Go to Appearance> Menus> Pages> View All tab. Notice the top two listed pages are Home:”Page Name123″, and the second one is “Page Name123”. I think this is where the bug begins.

What you’re describing has nothing to do with themes.
Use a custom menu for absolute control of your menu ‘tabs’ (I call them ‘items’).
