Links created in posts which appear on the home page are only active if the user selects the Continue Reading option. How can the links be made active in the post visible on the home page without having to Continue Reading? NB When looking at the posts on the home page it is not even apparent that the links even exist, even though the relevant text is there. Thanks.

Standard excerpts are automatically created by WordPress by filtering out any kind of advanced content or formatting and turning the excerpt to plain text. If you need markup (like links), use manual excerpts for the posts.
