New article > trying to add a featured image > it opens a blank page with the upload tab not working. So I have to go to Media and upload from there, not directly from a new article.

You could have some script conflicts in the dashboard.

Test by temporarily switching to one of the default Twenty themes to check if it’s related to the theme, and if that’s not it I suggest temporarily disabling all active plugins to see if one of them is at fault.
