How to update the theme having customized PHP file

    Hello,

I have a WordPress-based web-site running Nirvana theme. I have modified certain PHP files of this theme in the built-in WordPress Editor. For example, rearranged/added some elements in “single.php”, customized “404” page, etc.

However, recently my WordPress admin panel reported that there’s an updated version of Nirvana. I’ve clicked “update” and it just rewrote all PHP files. I lost all the changes I’ve made.

    Question:
Is it possible to update the theme without rewriting the PHP files? How do other people perform the update while having customized PHP code? Why doesn’t Nirvana create backups of modified files during update (it’s a common practice for all package updates)?

    Thanks,
    Elena
