We have a Nirvana-based web site (https://responsive.uucm.org/) that we are just about ready to go live with.
Our users are typically very unsophisticated and unfamiliar with technology.

On our front page, which uses the Nirvana Presentation Page, when you first come up with the front page on a PC, it is not obvious that there is lots more to see below, if you scroll down.

I’ve been struggling to figure out how to insert, somewhere close to the top of the Presentation Page (and not on other pages), some prominent text saying something like “Please scroll down for more…”

I could add a text widget to the Header Widgets area, except that where it is it is very restricted. I currently have two widgets in that, and they stack vertically, not horizontally, so any more widgets would either overlap the menu area, or add to the header area, neither of which seems a good idea.

I’m using another theme (a child of Twenty Seventeen) for a different site. In Twenty Seventeen, they provide an arrow icon to the right of the menu bar items that provides a slight hint that there is more below. It goes away once the screen size goes below a certain width, so it isn’t visible when it’s not needed. It is not visible on other pages than the front page. (They use SVG, if that’s any clue — probably an implementation detail.) Something like this might be a solution.

Do you have any other suggestions? I Have looked, and haven’t seen anything in your theme that would support this without my implementing something (we are using a child theme of Nirvana).
