For example I have 3 items defined in one category, showing in the Featured Boxes on the landing page. How can I determine/change which item is in the left box, middle box, right box?

I realized that the latest item is always to the left. But as I don’t know the final order of the items yet, I need to change that order afterwards..

The posts in the featured boxes are ordered by publish date in descending order (newest on top left, oldest on bottom right).

You can adjust the publish date/time from WordPress’ posts management (directly from the posts lists via quick edit or from the individual posts’ edit screens).
