Where can I change the read more button? Ideally, have it just be the words “Read More” and not a giant button.?

The same here – please 🙂 (for Fluida).

I would like them to look decent like in Tempera, just with the colored bottom line instead of the full-color rectangle burning out from the page.

The read more buttons appearance can be changed by adjusting the accent colors or applying custom styling:

a.continue-reading-link, a.continue-reading-link::before {
    background: #ccc;
    line-height: 2.2em;
}
